Karel Janssens

Karel Janssens focuses on IP and IT, media and technology, and unfair trade practices. He is a member of the Brussels Bar.

Karel advises companies in the software, telecoms and media sectors on all aspects of intellectual property law, with a particular focus on copyright and trademark-related matters. He also assists clients in drafting and negotiating all types of IP/IT-related agreements and accompanies clients in digital transformation processes.    

Karel also has a particular focus on the digital and platform economy, and advises clients on all internet-related matters such as e-commerce, online liability, and platform-to-business contracts.  He also assists national and international companies in complying with privacy and data protection legislation and advises companies on the Belgian and European regulatory framework for telecoms and media.

To complement his IP/IT practice, Karel has developed an expert understanding of consumer protection law and unfair trade practices.

Karel obtained his law degree at the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL) in 2004. He studied for a year at the Université de Montesquieu IV in Bordeaux and completed a master's degree in international and European law at the Free University of Brussels (VUB). In 2006, Karel began his career as a lawyer at a niche Brussels law firm specialising in IP and TMT. From 2007 to 2017, Karel worked at the Brussels office of an international law firm with headquarters in Washington, D.C. Karel joined & DE BANDT in March 2017 and was named partner on July 1, 2018.
